General Checkups

The Gentle Dentist in San Gabriel, California, is the place to be if you need general dental care. We specialize in excellent dental health for the entire family.

General check-ups play an important part in maintaining the health of the oral cavity. Besides keeping teeth clean with daily brushing and flossing at home, patients are recommended to be seen for professional cleanings and examinations every six months. These examinations look for tooth decay or other problems that need to be addressed. Finding problems early prevent the need for larger treatments, procedures, and expenses.

Keeping updated on new medical conditions, medications, or family health conditions is an important part of these regular examinations, as general health is also linked to dental health. Knowledge of general medical conditions warns the dentist of possible problems that could arise in the future. Dentists have also been known to advise patients of symptoms that point to general health conditions that need to be investigated. Referrals to a primary care physician have been given for diseases, such as diabetes or lupus.

During a dental examination, the teeth, gums, and bones are checked for abnormalities as well as the soft tissues of the mouth, neck, and face. X-rays are obtained once per year to monitor the condition of the jaws and teeth below the gumline.

Finally, patient education is provided for optimal dental care at home.

Dental Implants

Missing teeth not only affect the appearance of a smile. Speech and chewing can also become difficult. Patients seeking the healthiest replacement method can receive a dental implant at The Gentle Dentist in San Gabriel, California.

When a tooth is lost, more than just the visible portion of the tooth is missing. The root is also gone. The root is more than just the anchor for the tooth. Vibrations are conducted through the root into the jawbone. These vibrations stimulate the bone to maintain bone density and a healthy jaw. After the root is gone and the vibrations stop, bone density begins to decrease (by up to 25% in the first year alone) and continues to deteriorate. Continued loss of bone volume can lead to loss of muscle mass in the cheeks. Severe bone loss produces a sunken-in look of the jaw.

Dental implants are becoming the most popular tooth replacement method as it restores the vibrations to the jaw and prevents bone loss by replacing the root as well as the tooth. A minor surgical procedure in the office inserts a titanium screw into the bone. An abutment piece is added to the top of the screw to attach a dental crown above the gumline. The crown is color-matched to the remaining teeth.

Restoration

Dental restoration is a term that covers many different procedures and appliances used to restore teeth to normal health and function. Teeth that require restoration may be weak, decayed, broken, or even missing. A restoration could include implants, dentures, bridges, or simple fillings.

Tooth decay weakens tooth enamel and can spread deeper into the tooth. Treatment for tooth decay requires the decay to be removed from the tooth and special dental material placed to fill the defect. Fillings can also be used to replace larger areas of missing tooth enamel but are then referred to as inlays or onlays. Fillings are the most common dental procedure performed.

Implants, bridges, dentures, or crowns may be used by themselves or in combination to replace missing teeth. Crowns are used in dentures, bridges, and implants. Implants are used to replace a single tooth or as strong anchors for dentures and bridges.

Lost or broken teeth are obviously easy to identify but tooth decay is typically only discovered during a dental examination unless it has spread deep enough to cause tooth pain. Dental cleanings and examinations are important to the health of the entire oral cavity.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry is the use of dental procedures, products, and appliances to improve the appearance of the teeth and oral cavity. Several conditions can affect the appearance of the teeth.

• Missing teeth

• Broken teeth

• Gaps in teeth

• Chipped teeth

• Discolored or yellowed teeth

• Crooked teeth

• Buck teeth

Dental implants are used to replace missing teeth as well as to anchor dentures and bridges.

Teeth whitening can be done for discolored teeth. Depending on the degree of whitening required, the whitening process may only require one visit.

Dental veneers are tooth-colored shells that are bonded to the front of teeth. Chipped teeth, discolored teeth, or gaps can be covered with veneers.

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps that fit over a damaged or broken tooth. A crown can correct damage that has occurred above the gum line.

Dental shaping restores a disfigured tooth by resculpting the enamel with dental filling material. Simple chips can also be filled and rough edges rounded. A disfigured tooth will have abnormal growths ground down and a more normal shape built up.

The Gentle Dentist offers cosmetic dentistry for the improvement of your smile.

Teeth Whitening

We use the Zoom whitening system which gets your teeth the whitest you have ever seen. And it only takes one hour.

Who does not want a bright smile? No one, right? If your smile is not as bright as you would like, we can help you!

Teeth whitening gels contain hydrogen peroxide to activate the whitening. The only way to get effective whitening is to have a formula strong enough to penetrate the tooth enamel. At The Gentle Dentist, we offer professional teeth whitening that takes less time and provides better results than the kits you buy at the store. Some whitening treatments can be done in just one visit, although a higher degree of whitening will require more than one.

The higher amount of hydrogen peroxide requires professional supervision to prevent damage to the tooth enamel. If strong whitening gel is left on teeth too long, the enamel can become thin and sensitive to cold and heat.

Over-the-counter whitening kits require the gel to be left on the teeth for a long time and take weeks to months to complete treatment. Professional whitening treatments last 30 to 60 minutes.
